I've gotten over the fact that most of my favorite quotes come from Douglas Adams. In today's post, I'm going to list nine of my favorite quotes and try to explain why I like them. I think people should blame my dad for this post. He's the one who made me this quirky. So... listed it no particular order... And this won't be an entirely inclusive list. Because I'm sure I have other favorite quotes that I'm forgetting.

I'm also not including anything from my dad. I'll have to write another whole post to handle his quirky sayings. Nor do I mention How To Write Good, or Verbose Mother Goose, which will be two entirely different posts.

1. “There once was a boy named Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.”

I have the whole opening paragraph of CS Lewis's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader memorized. It's just such a great quote and everything. As the opening line of book, it grabs your attention and draws you straight it. It's incredible.

2. “To boldly split infinitives that no man has split before.”

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I did already mention that most of my favorite quotes are from Adams. I mean, he pokes fun at iconic sayings... everyone reading this had better know “To boldly go where no man has gone before.” …and he's just... hysterical. I mean, the paragraph in his book about a petunia plant that falls from the sky and thinks “Oh no, not again.” It's amazing! And to find out that later in his trilogy of five books, he explains why the petunia plant thought of such a thing. Adams is a mastermind. I would swear he's a genius.

3. “If Casey Stingle were alive, he'd be rolling over in his grave.”

Ralph Kiner. Self-explanatory.

4. “We must all hang together or we will certainly all hang apart.”

Benjamin Franklin. Founding father. Famous for proving that lightning is electricity. Founding of fire-fighting companies, libraries, stoves. The guy's a veritable genius and he has such a good command of words. In the movie, 1776 – which is most definitely worth a watch – John Adams says something to the effect of “I don't have time for your old analogies.” And Ben Franklin replies, “Aw John, this was a new one.”

5. “Interfere? Of course we're going to interfere! Always do what you're best at.”

Tom Baker, the fourth doctor, Doctor Who. We watched this episode just yesterday and that line describes anything and everything about the Doctor with such clarity and simplisty that it's just amazing. I love that line.

6. “Monsters don't die Percy. They can be killed, but they don't die.”

Thank you, Annabeth Chase. That clears up all my confusions. Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief. He's got a lot of great lines, like when Percy is plummeting from the top of the St. Louis Arch or talking about the pink poodle Gladiola.

7. “Most people think time is a progression of cause to effect but if you look at it from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more of a big ball of wiggly-wobbly-timey-whimey... stuff.”

Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who, Season Three, episode Blink. Great episode. Great quotes. Steven Moffat is undeniably a genius. I mean, seriously, that man as is good as Douglas Adams. And I've already established that Douglas Adams is a master.

8. “[Global Warming] is true because Al Gore said so.” “Is he a certified climate scientist?” “Even better. He's a politician.

An extranormal video talking about global warming. The video is hysterical, and sums up the basic problems with global “climate change” really well. And it pokes fun at Al Gore. Which is almost always funny.

And I would simply not be me if I didn't include this quote. I don't even know who said it first, but I love it anyways.
